about
Ryez (pronounced ‘rise’) is a London based alternative/rock artist and songwriter ‘ryezing’ from the ashes after a 10 year hiatus. Long story short…an unexpected passing of someone close a few weeks after her debut album release and launch party, knocked her off kilter, off the beaten industry track and down the rabbit hole, sapping her mojo and creative juices in the process.
Prior, in addition to gigging regularly on the London showcase circuit (including Islington O2 Academy, MontoWaterRats, The Bedford, Jamm Brixton, Dublin Castle), Ryez (formerly Vall) with band twice supported delta blues/ rock mavericks, Alabama 3 (A3) and country/ rockers, Honey Ryder. She had also begun to build a fanbase further afield with gigs in France and digital & FM airplay across the UK, Europe [France, Spain Italy], US, Canada & Australia.
In spirit, Ryez is an AfroPunk winding up for the breakout. Soon to begin work on a new album, in the meantime, this is the first of a handful of ‘throw backs’ offered to those who were there back in the day and an introductory taster to those discovering 'Ryez' for the first time.
‘Can I be you […] for just one day...’ is a reminder that when envy rears its unfashionable head, we can choose either to cave in and let obsession eat away, affect our well-being or at its most extreme, our lives, or use what we see as inspiration to positively and healthily (rock out and ) strive to become the best that we can be…
lyrics
CAN I BE YOU
I try so hard/ to be perfect
and I / keep falling falling down
And I have to pick myself up/ have to pick myself up / off the ground
I haven’t found the right way
I’m living on the thin line
I don’t want to fight life
I want to live it just like you
I know I shouldn’t criticise but it’s the only thing that makes me feel much better
Can I be you can I be you, can I be you hey hey hey
Can I be you can I be you can I be you for just a day
For just a day
Do you want to be me
I want to be you
Don’t like myself/ not this way
You make it look so easy/ everyday
Everyday every night every week I watch you on my TV
Smiling in my living room
Smiling in my living room
I don’t want to fight life
I want to live it just like you
I know I shouldn’t criticise but it’s the only thing That makes me feel much better
Hey
Can I be you/ can I be you can I be you hey hey hey
Can I be you can I be you can I be you for just a day
Can I be you/ can I be you can I be you hey hey hey
Can I be you can I be you can I be you for just a day
Be you be you be you be you
be you be you be you/ I wanna be you be you be you
I don’t like myself today not this way/ I don’t like myself this way not this way not this way/ don’t wanna get up in the morning look myself in the mirror don’t wanna wear the same clothes and go where everybody goes/ don’t wanna go down the same old street and go shopping/ don’t wanna toe the line say the right things in the right way no no I don’t wanna live this way no no no no no not today
I love this album...the textures, emotions, intimacy and boldness... old school blending beautifully with contemporariness...took me on a beautiful journey... RyeZ
